I love traveling during all seasons and one my favorite places to visit is Red River Gorge. If you’re not familiar with The Gorge, you’re in for a surprise! The Gorge is located near Stanton, KY and is a federally-designated National Geological Area, National Natural Landmark, National Archaeological District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It really is one of the most distinctive beautiful areas Kentucky has to offer and it’s located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s most known for the natural stone arches, unique cliffs, rock formations and sandstones. This isn’t something you can see anywhere in the Bluegrass State.
You don’t need to be an outdoor enthusiast to enjoy and appreciate the wonder and nature that the Gorge has to offer. The Gorge offers a number of hiking trails, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing and so much more. For me, I prefer to stick to the trails and hike my heart out. Although, I normally visit in spring and summer, fall is such a wonderful time to view the fall foliage and enjoy the cooler air. My favorite trail is the Indian Staircase and Indian Arch which is a slightly unmarked 3.5 mile trail that is graded difficult. However, there are a number of wonderful hiking trails for beginners and seasoned hikers. Check out the link below for some great hiking options.
If you really want to make The Gorge a truly unique experience, I would highly recommend booking through The Canopy Crew where there are a number of tree and dome houses to choose from. They can book up fast so I recommend booking a few months in advance. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to sleep in the woods among the stars in a unique setting.
Of course, there a number of camp grounds around the area or if you prefer lodging, I have listed some of my recommendations below.
Cliffview Resort
Natural Bridge State Resort Park
Red River Gorgeous Cabin Rentals
The Gorge is located in a remote area of the state and there are not a lot of food options. Although, if you do want to stop for a bite to eat, you can’t miss the famous Miguel’s Pizza located in Slade, KY. Just be sure to pack plenty of food and bottled water. It’s no fun being in a remote area and driving miles to pick up food or grab an essential item. I always say, pack smarter not harder.
If you’re looking for unique activities to experience at The Gorge, The Gorge Underground offers a variety of activities. Choose from a boat, kayak, SUP, or even Ziplining in the Gorge. The SUP tour was an absolute favorite of mine! What a fun experience to paddle underground in the dark! Click on the Homepage link below to check out their website.

Red River Gorge has so much to offer and I recommend visiting in the fall, but anytime at The Gorge is fun! Looking for more information to plan your Red River Gorge getaway? Check out their tourism website or message me with any questions!
