Bourbon and Horses: The Crossroads of Kentucky

Nestled among the rolling hills lined with black wooden fences, green grass and an everlasting display of oak trees lining miles of horse farms. You drive down the winding roads and wonder what billionaires own this prestigious Kentucky land that is home to thousands of horses making their mark of this beautiful great state. Tucked away south of Lexington, Kentucky is Versailles. A quiet quaint town known for bourbon and horse farms. Only a short drive between Louisville and Lexington makes this town a place to stop and take in the fresh sites of horse farms and bourbon. If you live in Kentucky or just passing by, the beauty captivates even the ones born and raised next door. If you’re like me and have a passion for traveling or experiencing new things, look no further than Versailles, KY and make Sun Valley Farm your first stop. Sun Valley Farm is a family owned thoroughbred farm, raising and breeding horses. They offer a different array of tours which allows you to experience life first hand on the farm as well as interacting with the horses. The tour we experienced was the Thoroghbred Nursery Tour which lasted approximately 60 minutes. The tour takes you through the history of the farm and the interaction with horses and their foal’s. This is a wonderful experience and our kids enjoyed the up close and personal touch of the animals. Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 per child. Once you finish the tour which ends at the original farmhouse, take a drive next door to the Woodford Reserve Distillery and experience the taste of bourbon.

Even if you aren’t a bourbon fan, the history and the ground of the distilleries are enough to spark your interest. Let’s not forget that each distillery has a welcome center, gift shop, tours and bourbon tasting. Since we live in this inviting state we frequent the distilleries to take a peak at the bottles or the gifts. It’s enough to keep us coming back multiple times throughout the year. If you have time, you can check out other popular distilleries near Versailles such as Castle and Key, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey. However, if you are interested in doing a tour or a tasting of the bourbons, I recommend making a reservation in advance. Reservations sell out fast on the weekends and you don’t want to miss out on this experience. Whether you are passing through or planning a day, the crossroads of horse and bourbon are sure to bring a spark of enjoyment.
