Why this Hidden Gem is your Next Weekend Getaway

Punderson Lodge

Nestled among the large oak trees, wild flowers blooming among the landscape and the quiet shimmering lakes sits a large English Tudor manor. It takes you back in time where there is no need for technology or for the worries of the outside world. Pulling up to the large manor estate immediately gives you a sense of that old time feel. Once inside and settled in my room, I wandered throughout the grounds and found myself relaxed and away from life’s current stresses and immersed in an old time world that makes me wonder how life was back in simpler times.

Dinner was nothing short of amazing as we dined and drank wine overlooking the Punderson Lake that reflected in the evening sun. Adirondack chairs lined the large green well manicured lawn and the evening band played well known hits such as “Strangers in the Night” by Frank Sinatra. After dinner I grabbed a classic novel and made my way to the large open lawn and found a spot overlooking the lake and buried myself in reading until the sun slowly dipped down below the sky. As night appeared, I found myself drifting to sleep under the blanket of the night skies and the sound of summer putting me fast to sleep.

Morning came and I was welcomed by the bright sun peering through the old tudor windows. Sleeping in without my kids to wake me felt both lonely and pleasant. Grabbing my key, I headed down to the Cherry Dining Room that greeted me with a large fireplace, high ceilings, and beams that hung a large chandelier. I asked for outdoor seating so I could enjoy a cup of coffee overlooking Punderson Lake and I was pleasantly surprised by the temperatures being a mild mid seventies to low eighties in August. It made for a comfortable experience on the patio with the bright blue skies peering above.

After consuming coffee, pancakes, eggs, and bacon, it was time to hit the many trails that are offered in Punderson State Park. I headed over to the Iroquois Trail and Beach Trail which is an easy trail that walks you along the lake and passes the public state park beach. There are many trails located in the park and I wish I had time to explore them all. I also noticed the many golf and disc golfers that were on the greens enjoying the sport on a mild Saturday morning. I couldn’t help but take a dip in the large outdoor pool after building up a sweat from my hike and bathing in the sun until my skin could sense the burn from a lack of sunscreen. Maybe next time I will remember to pack the SPF.

I was pleasantly surprised how many activities were available at Punderson State Park and lodge and I have to admit that I had my hesitations. If I had a few more days, I would have taken a kayak on the lake, hiked a few more trails, spent more time at the pool and researched the historic claims of its haunting. I look forward to returning in the future when I find myself leading me back to my family in northern Ohio. I’ve never been a huge fan of this state , but I’ve learned no matter where you go, you always find the beauty and I found it here at Punderson State Park and Resort.
